The Experience

“You know you’re not in Dubai anymore when the skyline starts to thin out and the desert takes over. Our driver, Ahmed, pointed out Jebel Ali Port as we left—he seemed proud of it, like he built it himself. The drive was longer than I expected (almost two hours with traffic), but I liked watching the sand change color. There’s this moment when you first spot Abu Dhabi’s white domes in the haze—it’s weirdly quiet in the car then. I think we all felt it.”

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is… well, it’s huge. Not just big—like echoing footsteps and marble so smooth I almost slipped in my borrowed abaya (they hand those out for women at the door). The air inside smells faintly of stone and something floral. Our guide explained how many workers came from different countries to build it; I kept staring up at the chandeliers. There were families taking photos everywhere but somehow it didn’t feel crowded. Maybe because everyone was whispering.

After that we wandered through Heritage Village. It’s a bit touristy but I liked watching an old man weaving baskets by hand—his hands moved so fast, barely looking down. Lunch was at Marina Mall (I got shawarma and fresh juice), nothing fancy but honestly after walking in that heat anything cold tastes perfect. The Corniche drive is where Abu Dhabi feels most itself: calm sea on one side, glass towers on the other. We stopped for quick photos near Emirates Palace—felt like we were trespassing into someone else’s world.

I still think about the smell at the dates market—sweet and earthy all at once. Tried a few kinds (the sticky ones are best) before heading to Yas Island for a Ferrari World photo stop. Didn’t go inside but those red curves against blue sky look surreal up close. By then everyone was tired and a bit sunburned but nobody wanted to leave yet. It’s funny how a day trip from Dubai can make Abu Dhabi feel both familiar and totally new.
