The experience

The tour starts in Gueliz and Hivernage, the modern side of Marrakech built by the French in the early 1900s, where you'll pass the main avenue locals call the Champs Elysées of Marrakech. From there you move into the old town at the Koutoubia Mosque, a 12th-century landmark whose minaret is the tallest building in the city and visible from almost everywhere. Your guide, born and raised in Marrakech, walks you through the Jewish Quarter (Mellah) to show the role Jewish culture played in shaping the city's identity, then leads you to Bahia Palace, where Moorish architecture, ceramic tiles and carved details fill every room.

The heart of the tour is the medina's souks, a maze of bazaars where leather workers, carpet weavers and spice merchants operate their stalls. You'll pass workshops of traditional Moroccan carpets and Berber boucherouite rugs, brass lamp galleries, and stalls packed with colorful spices and essential oils. The guide steers you toward the establishments worth your time, so you're not guessing which shops to enter. If you want, you'll stop at a well-reputed herbal store for Moroccan mint tea and local pastry while learning about herbs and spices, then continue toward Bab Agnaou, one of the nineteen gates of Marrakech and the main entrance to the Royal Kasbah. The tour also includes a visit to the Farnatchi, where you can see how traditional hammams heat water using methods that date back to Roman times, and where locals still bring dishes like Tanjia to be cooked in wood-fired ovens.
