The Experience

The day starts at Hotel Ali on Jemaa el-Fna square, the medina's beating heart. Your guide leads you through the square itself—a public plaza that draws over a million visitors yearly—then moves into the surrounding neighborhoods: the Koutoubia Mosque, built in the 12th century and the largest in the city; the market squares friendlier than the main souks, where vendors set up on the ground or trestle tables; and the Bahia Palace, a 19th-century Moorish palace that is now a museum and one of Morocco's architectural masterpieces. The contrast between the disorder and noise of Jemaa el-Fna and the serenity of Jardin Secret (the Secret Garden) is part of what the guide shows you.

The souks themselves are a maze of narrow passages and vendor stalls. A private guide means you move through them at your own pace, stopping where something catches your eye instead of being herded through. You'll also see the community oven and pass the museum of Marrakech.
