The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the color—this electric, almost impossible blue at Majorelle Garden. Our guide, Youssef, laughed when I tried to say “Majorelle” in French (I definitely didn’t nail it). The garden felt like a world inside a world: birds chattering overhead, cacti taller than most people I know, and this faint smell of wet earth after last night’s rain. We skipped the line—felt a bit like cheating—and stepped into the Berber Museum tucked in the villa. Some of those silver necklaces looked heavy enough to anchor a boat.

Driving through the new city, Youssef pointed out buildings from the 1920s—some still with faded Art Deco details if you squint. Then we slipped into the old Jewish Mellah quarter. There was this bakery with stacks of round loaves; the baker handed us a piece straight from the oven (still warm, smoky). He explained how these ovens serve whole neighborhoods. I tried to imagine that kind of daily rhythm back home—couldn’t really.

Bahia Palace was quieter than I expected. Sunlight crept across zellij tiles while our guide traced his finger over carved cedar ceilings. He told us stories about sultans and jealous wives—he swore they were true, but who knows? My shoes made this soft tapping sound on the cool tiles. After that we wandered into the Medina’s maze: fruit stands stacked high, olives piled in pyramids, blacksmiths hammering somewhere nearby. The air tasted like spices and charcoal smoke. At Jemaa el-Fna square it got loud—snake charmers’ flutes tangling with calls from orange juice sellers. It’s chaos but somehow makes sense when you’re there.

I still think about that moment in the souk when everything smelled like cumin and oranges at once. Maybe it was just lunchtime hunger talking—or maybe Marrakech really does get under your skin after a few hours wandering with someone who knows every shortcut.
