The Experience
Your guide meets you at your hotel or riad after breakfast and drives you first to Majorelle Garden, a botanical garden created by French artist Jacques Majorelle in 1923 and opened to the public in 1947. The garden holds over 300 plant species from five continents, arranged around a Cubist villa designed in the 1930s. The signature Majorelle blue—a vivid cobalt that frames pathways and structures—contrasts with the yellows and greens of the plants. From there, the driver takes you across the medina walls into the old town to the Koutoubia Mosque, founded in 1147 and Marrakech's largest mosque; your guide explains its architecture and influence on buildings like Seville's Giralda and Rabat's Hassan Tower.
The route then passes Bab Agnaou, one of 19 gates into the ramparts, built during the Almohad period in the 12th century as an entrance to the Caliphal Kasbah—the administrative and military center. Flanked by two cannons, it's one of the city's most imposing gates. You continue through the Jewish quarter to Bahia Palace, an 8,000-square-meter structure built by Grand Vizier Si Moussa in the 1860s. The palace showcases intricate marquetry and zouak (painted wood) ceilings; the Cour d'Honneur courtyard, with its 1,500-square-meter floor of Italian Carrara marble, is the centerpiece. Only a portion of the palace's eight hectares and 150 rooms is open to visitors, though its grand spaces sometimes host cultural events.
Next comes a walking tour through the medina's souks—the Semmarine markets where Arab and Berber cultures meet in color and noise. Your guide leads you through stalls selling spices, olives, leather goods, and local handicrafts. Jemaa el-Fna square, the social heart of the medina, comes next; it's known for snake charmers, acrobats, musicians, storytellers, and water carriers, creating an atmosphere that has made it one of the world's most famous squares. The tour ends at Ben Youssef Madrasa, the largest Islamic college in Morocco at its height and a jewel of Saadian architecture. Named after the adjacent Ben Youssef Mosque founded by Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf (1106–1142), it's now a historical site where your guide shares details about its significance. You return to your hotel or riad to finish.
