The Experience

The Koutoubia Mosque, founded in 1147, anchors the day—Marrakech's largest mosque and the landmark that inspired the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat. Your guide walks you through its history and significance before moving to Bab Agnaou, one of 19 gates into the old city, a 12th-century Almohad entrance flanked by cannons and still one of the most impressive gates in Marrakech. From there, Bahia Palace opens up: an 8,000-square-metre sprawl of intricate marquetry, plasterwork and painted wood built by Grand Vizier Si Moussa in the 1860s. The Cour d'Honneur courtyard, with its 1,500-square-metre floor of Italian Carrara marble, is the undisputed centerpiece, though only a portion of the palace's 150 rooms is open to visitors.

After lunch, the day shifts into the sensory heart of the Medina. You walk through the colorful souks with your guide, moving through markets where Arab and Berber cultures meet—spice stalls, leather goods, local handicrafts, the noise and color of the old city. Ben Youssef Madrasa, the largest Koranic school in Morocco at its height, stands as a historical anchor; your guide explains its connection to the adjacent Ben Youssef Mosque founded by Sultan Ali ibn Yusuf in the early 12th century. Jemaa El Fnaa Square comes next, the main gathering point of the Medina where storytellers, acrobats and street vendors work from sunrise to sunset, and food stalls take over in the evening.

The route then leaves the walled Medina for Gueliz, the modern French-era district built during the protectorate. Wide avenues lined with upscale restaurants, galleries and international brands replace the narrow alleys. Majorelle Garden, created by French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle in 1923 and opened to the public in 1947, closes the day—a botanical garden and artist's landscape surrounding a Cubist villa designed by architect Paul Sinoir. The Yves Saint Laurent Museum sits adjacent, housing 5,000 items of clothing and 15,000 haute couture accessories from the Fondation Pierre Bergé–Yves Saint Laurent collection, along with a bookshop, café and research library.
