The experience

The tour starts at Djemaa El Fna Square, where the medina's energy sets the tone. Your guide leads you through the Koutoubia Mosque (the city's largest, its tower topped with four copper globes and its name tied to the bookshops that once surrounded it) before moving into the palace quarter. Bahia Palace opens up around you: 160 rooms arranged in courtyards, their walls covered in stucco panels, carved cedar ceilings and shiny marble. The palace was built between 1894 and 1900 in Alaoui style and sits within an eight-hectare garden, a scale that makes clear what wealth looked like in that era.

From there, you walk into Ben Youssef Madrassa, a Quranic school rebuilt in the 1560s where around 800 students once memorized the Koran. The zellij tilework, stucco plasterwork and carved wood show the same craftsmanship you saw in the palace, but the space itself is tighter, more intimate: built for study rather than display. The guide then takes you through Souk Semmarine and Souk El Attarine, where leather workers sit at their benches and the air shifts from the smell of hides to the scent of spices and perfumes. Bargaining happens here. It's part of how the souks work.

Toward the end, you step into Jardin Secret: a tranquil walled garden in the heart of the medina, surrounded by refined Islamic architecture and plants. The guide explains the Khettara, an ancient underground irrigation system that kept Marrakech alive for centuries. The tour closes back at Djemaa El Fna, where the square's rhythm continues around you.
