The experience

You meet your guide at Café France on Jemaa el-Fna square, where he gives you a brief overview of what the day holds. From there, you walk to the Koutoubia Mosque, the 12th-century landmark that has stood as the city's guardian for centuries through dynasties and decline. The mosque itself is not entered on this tour, but you see its scale and hear its history from someone who knows the city as a local, not as a script.

The Saadian Tombs come next: a 16th-century royal cemetery where kings who defended the kingdom are buried in tombs built to match their status. You also visit a traditional Berber pharmacy tucked into the Medina, then move into the narrow streets themselves. This is where the tour opens up: the Medina is a labyrinth, and your guide navigates it while you see the handcrafts that gave Morocco its place in Islamic-Andalusian history. Craftsmen still work in these souks, preserving techniques their ancestors carried forward. You get free time to explore on your own, to buy something, to sit in a corner, to move at your own pace through the alleys.

Bahia Palace comes last: a 19th-century structure built around stories of power, honor and the men who rose from slavery to rule.
