The Experience
The tour opens with thirty minutes at Jemaa el-Fna, where your guide explains the square's history and role in Marrakech life. From there you move into the medina's narrow streets to spend about forty minutes in the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, learning how different communities lived alongside each other and shaped the city's architecture and traditions. You'll see how a traditional riad is built and what it meant culturally before moving on to Bahia Palace, where the guide walks you through the courtyards and decorated rooms, telling the story of the palace's importance.
The route then takes you toward Rahba Kedima, an old spice market, as you cut through the medina's working souks and shop-lined passages. At the Ben Youssef Madrasa you stop to look at the carved plasterwork and tilework, and the guide covers its historical significance. After that comes time for photos and questions. The final stretch brings you to a women's cooperative where you see how argan oil, spices and natural cosmetics are made using traditional methods, and learn about the role these businesses play in the local economy. You finish with time to browse the authentic souks nearby, with your guide offering advice on what to buy and how to shop.
The remaining time is built in for walking between sites. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French and is there to answer what you want to know as you go. The tour works for all fitness levels and is wheelchair accessible; infants ride free and can sit on a lap or in a stroller.
