- Experience Jemaa el-Fnaa square
The Experience
The tour starts at Bahia Palace, a 160-room complex built in the late 19th century in the grand Alaoui style. You walk through its massive layout of inner courtyards and gardens, stopping to study the traditional stucco panels, zellij tilework, and painted cedarwood ceilings that line each room. The scale alone takes time to absorb—this was built as a statement of power, and the guide explains what each section meant and who lived where.
From there you move to the Saadian Tombs, the final resting place of the Saadian Dynasty under Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. The tombs were sealed for centuries and only rediscovered in 1917; what you see now is the breathtaking architecture, brilliant Italian marble, and intricate decorative carvings that survived underground. The guide walks you through the history of why they were hidden and what their rediscovery meant to the city. You'll also see the Koutoubia Mosque from the outside—the 12th-century Almohad minaret tower decorated with geometric tile patterns and topped with four copper globes that rise over the old city skyline.
The tour ends at Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech's main square, where the energy shifts entirely. This is where the city's open-air theater comes alive: food stalls, street performers, traditional musicians, and snake charmers create a multi-sensory environment that feels nothing like the palaces and tombs you've just left. The guide helps you read what you're seeing and can point out the best spots to stand or eat if you want to linger. Souk Semmarine, the largest covered market alley in the Medina, is also part of the route—a colorful maze of textiles, leather goods, copper lanterns, and spices where bargaining with local artisans is part of the experience.
