The Experience

What does a day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira actually look like? Hotel pickup in the morning, then a drive to the coast where the old city sits on a rocky peninsula with ramparts overlooking the ocean. The medina's narrow streets are painted in white and blue, and the real draw is the port—a working fishing harbor where red nets hang on the docks and boats arrive with sardines and crustaceans sold at auction. You'll walk past the Sqala du Port, the crenellated bastion built in the 18th century by Alaouite sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah to protect the city, and move through Moulay Hassan square into the old Jewish Quarter.

The argan oil cooperative visit sits inland from the harbor. Women who run it walk you through the steps of making the oil by hand, and you see the argan forest—the largest in Morocco. Lunch happens at one of the small restaurants on the harbor's edge, where grilled sardines are the standard order. The guide leads the stops, but the Sqala and medina are yours to explore at your own pace once you arrive.

The full day runs 10 to 12 hours door to door, which means you leave Marrakech early and return in the evening. Transport is in an air-conditioned vehicle with fuel included.
