Summary

Essaouira medina walks, ocean air, grilled fish lunch from Marrakech

You’ll feel Essaouira’s salty breeze as you wander its UNESCO medina with a local guide, watch fishermen at work by the harbor, savor freshly grilled seafood for lunch, and stroll along sandy Essaouira Beach before heading back to Marrakech—maybe with sand still in your shoes and new stories to tell.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t expect the smell of salt and cedar to hit me so soon after leaving Marrakech. Our driver picked us up right outside our riad—no hunting for meeting points, thankfully—and after a couple hours of watching the landscape shift from ochre to green and then suddenly blue, we rolled into Essaouira. The wind here is famous, but I didn’t really get it until it whipped my scarf sideways as soon as I stepped out. Not cold exactly—just sharp enough to wake you up.

Our guide, Youssef, led us through the medina’s narrow lanes (UNESCO-listed, but honestly it just felt lived-in and real). He stopped to chat with a woodworker who was sanding thuya boxes right there on the street. The scent was sweet and smoky—almost like incense. I tried asking about a chess set in French and got a smile and a reply in rapid Darija; Youssef translated with a shrug: “He says you have good taste but bad bargaining skills.” Fair enough.

The harbor was louder than I expected—gulls everywhere, fishermen shouting over each other as they hauled in nets. We sat by the water for lunch—grilled sardines so fresh they almost tasted like the sea itself (I still think about that first bite). There was sand in my shoes and lemon juice on my fingers and I didn’t really mind either. Afterward we wandered along Essaouira Beach for a bit; some kids were flying kites that kept dipping too low before snapping back up again. The light here is different—kind of silvery, not harsh like Marrakech.

I bought some spices near Skala fortress just because they smelled warm (cumin? paprika? I have no idea what half of them are). On the drive back, everyone was quiet or dozing off except Youssef humming along to old Moroccan pop on the radio. Something about that made me feel like I’d actually been somewhere—not just ticked off another day trip from Marrakech.
