The experience

The minivan leaves Marrakech in the morning and drives to Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, on the Atlantic coast. Once you arrive at the port, you have the day to move through the town at your own pace. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its narrow streets hold local crafts, artwork, spices and market stalls. You can browse the shops or simply wander the architecture and soak up the atmosphere without a fixed schedule or a group moving in lockstep.

The Skala fortress sits at the edge of the medina, and the beach stretches beyond it. You can stroll the sand, watch fishermen at work, or stand at the fortress and photograph the Atlantic. The ocean breeze and the scale of the water are the reason people make this trip instead of staying in Marrakech's heat and souks. If you want to try windsurfing or kitesurfing, the beach has those options too.

Essaouira is famous for its seafood, and lunch is the centerpiece of the day if you choose the option that includes it. You eat grilled fish or seafood tagine at a harbor restaurant: the catch changes with what came in that morning. If you book without lunch, you can still eat at the harbor, but you pay separately and choose the restaurant yourself. Either way, the return drive to Marrakech happens in the late afternoon, and your driver drops you at your hotel.
