Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Full-day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira

  • Explore UNESCO-listed medina
  • Visit vibrant markets
  • See skilled artisans at work
  • Enjoy fresh seafood
  • Walk along sandy beaches
  • Admire ocean views

  • Return to Marrakech

We rolled out of Marrakech just after sunrise — the city still half asleep, pink light on the walls. Our driver, Youssef, had this habit of humming softly to the radio as we left behind the chaos and headed west. The road to Essaouira is long but not boring; you get these glimpses of argan trees (with actual goats in them — I thought it was a joke until I saw it). After about three hours, that first salty whiff of ocean air hit me through the window. It’s weird how you can almost taste the sea before you see it.

Essaouira’s medina is nothing like Marrakech. It’s quieter, more blue than red, and there’s this constant sound of gulls overhead. We wandered through narrow lanes where woodworkers tapped away at thuya boxes — one guy let me try sanding a piece but I probably made it worse. Our guide, Samira, pointed out old cannons along the Skala fortress wall and told stories about Portuguese pirates (I only half listened because I was distracted by kids playing football right below us). Lunch was grilled sardines at a market stall — messy hands, lemon juice everywhere, but honestly some of the freshest fish I’ve ever had.

I kept thinking how relaxed everyone seemed here compared to Marrakech. There was this old man weaving baskets near the ramparts who smiled every time someone stopped but never tried to sell anything. The beach stretched out wide and windy; sand got in my shoes but I didn’t care. On our way back to the van, Samira bought us tiny almond cookies from a woman in a purple scarf — they tasted sweet and nutty and kind of lingered on my tongue all afternoon.

The drive back felt quieter somehow. Maybe it was just tiredness or maybe that feeling you get when you’ve seen something gentle and real. If you’re thinking about a day trip Marrakech to Essaouira Mogador, don’t expect big drama — it’s more like slow magic that sneaks up on you. I still think about that blue light on the stones near sunset.
