Walk a fortress overlooking the Atlantic, then watch argan oil being made by hand

A small-group day trip from Marrakech to Essaouira, a coastal city known for its blue doors, Portuguese architecture and fresh seafood. Your driver picks you up from your hotel, drives 2.5 hours to the coast, and you spend the day exploring the medina, visiting the Skala Fortress overlooking the Atlantic, learning how argan oil is extracted at a women's cooperative, and eating lunch at the fish market. The return drive reaches Marrakech in the evening.

The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. You'll travel in an air-conditioned car with a driver who knows the route and can point out stops worth seeing. After 2.5 hours on the road, you arrive in Essaouira, a small port city that has absorbed centuries of occupation—Portuguese, Moroccan, and others—and kept its own character. The blue-painted doors and whitewashed walls give it a look unlike anywhere else in Morocco, and the Atlantic wind that shaped the city is why surfers come from across the world.

Free time in the medina lets you walk the straight streets at your own pace, browse the handicraft shops, and watch artisans carving Thuya wood. The Skala Fortress sits at the edge of the old port, its bronze cannons facing the ocean. Below it, the fish market is working: vendors call out the catch, and the smell of fresh seafood fills the air. Lunch happens here—you eat the Moroccan way, with fish cooked to order at the market stalls. Your driver can suggest a spot if you want guidance, but the choice is yours.

The women's cooperative where argan oil is made is a working space, not a shop. You see how the kernels are cracked, ground and pressed by hand to extract the oil that has been used in Morocco for cooking, skincare and medicine for centuries. After the afternoon in Essaouira, your driver takes you back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.
