The Experience

We rolled out of Marrakech before sunrise, streets still half-asleep except for a few cats darting between the shadows. The van climbed up into the Atlas Mountains, and our guide Youssef started telling stories — some about old traders, some about his grandmother’s couscous (he swears it’s the best in Morocco). The road twisted higher through Tizi-n-Tichka pass, and I kept pressing my forehead to the window just to catch those first streaks of sun on the snow-dusted peaks. It smelled faintly of diesel and wild thyme when we stopped for mint tea somewhere above the clouds. I didn’t expect it to feel that cold up there.

By midday we reached Aït Ben Haddou. It’s one of those places you think you’ve seen in photos but it hits different in real life — mudbrick walls glowing orange under a sky so bright you squint. Youssef pointed out where Gladiator was filmed (he grinned when he said it), but honestly I was more interested in watching a kid chase a plastic ball down an alley while his grandmother yelled after him. Lunch was bread still warm from the fire and chicken tagine with olives — I burned my tongue because I couldn’t wait.

The drive south felt endless until suddenly there were palm trees everywhere and then just sand. In Zagora, camels were waiting — taller than I expected, with that slow blinking patience they have. The saddle wasn’t exactly comfortable but after ten minutes I stopped caring; everything went quiet except for hooves sinking into soft earth and someone humming behind me. Sunset in the Zagora Desert is hard to describe without sounding dramatic, so I’ll just say the light made even my dusty shoes look beautiful. At camp, dinner was loud with laughter and drums under stars that didn’t seem real. I lay awake most of the night listening to wind move across the dunes — not sure if anyone else noticed how cold it got or if it was just me missing my jacket.
