The Experience

"How many people actually live up there?" someone asked our guide as the High Atlas came into view, and he laughed — the kind of laugh that meant the answer was complicated. Ait Benhaddou sits on the other side of those mountains, a UNESCO-listed kasbah where a handful of families still inhabit the clay-brick kasbahs that have stood for centuries. The drive from Marrakech takes you up and over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, through Berber villages clinging to the slopes, and then down into the Ounila valley. The last stretch is rough — 4 kilometers of rocky off-road that shakes you around a bit, but that's what keeps the place from feeling overrun.

Once you're there, the guide walks you across the dried riverbed and into the kasbah itself. You get time to wander the narrow passages and climb the rooftops, and at some point you'll be invited for tea with one of the families living inside — not a performance, just tea in someone's home. The light hits the clay walls differently depending on the hour, and you'll understand why so many films have been shot here. After lunch at a local restaurant with a view of the whole thing spread out below, you head to Ouarzazate, about an hour away. The cinema studios there are smaller than you'd expect, but they're real — sets from actual productions, and the Kasbah Taourirt next door is the former palace of Pacha El Glaoui, which tells you something about the power that used to sit in this region. The drive back to Marrakech follows the same pass in reverse, and you're usually back by evening.

The whole day is structured around the light and the timing — you need the morning to cross the mountains without rushing, midday to explore Ait Benhaddou properly, and the afternoon for Ouarzazate before the drive home. An English-speaking driver handles the route and the commentary, and the vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters when you're climbing elevation and then dropping back down. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't have to figure out how to get to the starting point or negotiate a ride back at the end of the day.
