The Experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t really know what to expect from a Casablanca day trip out of Marrakech. The city always sounded big and busy—maybe too modern? But as soon as our driver threaded us through early morning Marrakech traffic, I started feeling that weird mix of nerves and curiosity. Our guide, Youssef, had this way of explaining things that made even the highway feel like part of the story. He pointed out roadside stalls selling oranges (the smell hit me even with the window up) and joked about how Casablanca’s weather is “never quite sure if it wants to be Paris or Rabat.”

First stop was the Sacred Heart Cathedral—white and angular against a blue sky, with these stained-glass windows that catch you off guard when sunlight hits just right. There were kids playing soccer outside, their laughter echoing around all those old columns. We wandered through United Nations Square next; it’s noisy but kind of hypnotic, with people weaving between trams and fountains. I tried to ask for directions in French—let’s just say my accent got a smile but not much else.

The real heart-thumper was stepping into the Hassan II Mosque. You hear about its size (it’s massive), but standing under that minaret with sea air blowing in is something else entirely. Tiles everywhere—cool under your hands if you touch them—and the call to prayer drifting over from somewhere unseen. Youssef explained how parts of it sit over the Atlantic, which made me glance down at my feet like maybe I could feel water moving below. Lunch came after—a tagine so fragrant I still think about it when I smell cumin at home.

We finished at the Corniche, watching locals sip mint tea by the ocean while seagulls argued overhead. The sand felt gritty and warm between my toes; I didn’t swim but just sat there awhile, thinking about how different Casablanca feels from anywhere else in Morocco. On the drive back to Marrakech, sunset smeared everything gold and quieted everyone down for a bit—I guess sometimes you only realize how much you’ve seen once you’re heading home.
