The Experience

“You see that curve up ahead? That’s where the snow sometimes lingers even in spring,” our driver Youssef said, pointing out the window as we zigzagged through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. I pressed my forehead to the glass—there was this mix of cold mountain air sneaking through the cracked window and that dusty, sun-baked smell I’ll always link to Morocco. Ouarzazate felt like something between a film set and a real town—maybe because it actually is both. She kept slipping in stories about Game of Thrones filming here; I think she secretly enjoyed watching us try to recognize scenes. The wind picked up little grains of sand that somehow ended up in my shoes (still finding them days later). Lunch was this slow-cooked lamb tagine on a terrace overlooking Ait Benhaddou—the kind of meal you eat too slowly because you’re staring at mud-brick towers glowing in the afternoon light.

Ait Benhaddou itself was quieter than I thought it’d be. Kids played soccer near the riverbed while an old man waved from his rooftop. Our local guide explained how families still live inside some of these ancient walls, though honestly I spent half the time just running my hands along the rough clay bricks—trying to picture all those caravans passing through centuries ago. The climb up is steeper than it looks (I definitely got winded), but standing on top with all that silence around you… it sticks with you. On the drive back to Marrakech, everyone got quiet for a while—just watching those Berber villages slide by under that pinkish sky. Not sure why but it felt right not to talk much then.
