The Experience
"Is that really where they filmed it?" your guide will probably hear that question more than once. Aït Benhaddou, the kasbah rising from the valley floor near Ouarzazate, has been the backdrop for so many films that it's hard to separate the place from the movies. But the real draw isn't the Hollywood connection — it's that you're standing in front of something that's been there since the 11th century, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that once anchored the trade route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Your driver picks you up at 7am from your hotel in Marrakech and heads south toward the High Atlas.
The drive itself is half the experience. The N9 road winds through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass at 2,260 meters, and your driver will stop at the scenic overlooks so you can actually take in the panoramic views instead of just glimpsing them through the window. The road is bumpy in places — it's the real thing, not a smooth highway — and you'll see why this pass was so crucial to the old trade routes. Around noon you arrive at Aït Benhaddou. Your local guide meets you there and takes you through the village on foot, pointing out the clay architecture and the way families still live in some of these structures. Lunch isn't included, so you choose where to eat in the village, and your guide picks you up afterward to continue the walking tour.
After Aït Benhaddou, it's a 45-minute drive to Ouarzazate, where you have time to explore on your own. The Kasbah Tawrirt is the main draw here — another fortress with its own film history, and it gives you a sense of how these structures were actually used and defended. The studio itself isn't part of the tour, so you're free to wander the town at your own pace. By 7pm you're back at your hotel in Marrakech, having crossed the mountains twice and seen two of the region's most photographed kasbahs without having to arrange transport, guides, or timing yourself.
