The Experience

The drive south from Marrakech covers just under 30 kilometers and crosses land dotted with argan trees—the ones with goats clinging to the branches eating the fruit. The locals collect the kernels the goats reject, roast them, and press the oil for their own use or to sell. It's a detail you'll see on the way in, before the city itself comes into view.

Once in Essaouira, you have roughly five hours of free time to move through the medina on your own. The old city is a maze of alleys dividing the districts and souks—organized despite the tangle, with clothing mixed in among spices, necklaces, bracelets, olives and vegetables. The medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001 and is built on 18th-century European military principles, so the gates show two different styles: rounded Cherifian doors and European pedimented doors with fluted columns. Restaurants line the terraces where the morning's fresh catch is cooked for lunch. The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, sits near what was once the royal palace and the port district.

The port itself is the second center of the city. Throughout the day, fishermen maintain their boats and prepare for outings; at midday, blue boats fill the harbor in a colorful, lively atmosphere. The port is protected by La Sqala du Port d'Essaouira, one of the main fortifications built in the 18th century. The beach stretches nearly six kilometers and is popular with surfers who come for the strong waves. The water stays fairly cool year-round—about 18 degrees—and the currents are strong, so most visitors walk the sand and watch the boats rather than swim. The tour wraps with the drive back to Marrakech.
