The Experience
The day starts at 7:30 am with pickup from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. The drive to Essaouira takes you through argan tree fields—the only place on earth where these trees grow outside Latin America—with a stop to photograph them and rest. If you want, you can visit a small women's cooperative where argan oil is extracted and buy some; the oil is used in cooking and cosmetics. A few kilometers further on, you'll reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Essaouira itself, a small blue and white town that feels like a Breton port transplanted to Morocco.
Once you arrive at the port, the afternoon is yours. Walk through the old Medina with its narrow streets and French and Portuguese architecture, or head straight to the beach and harbor. The ramparts, the Jewish quarter, La Skala fortress, and Place Moulay El Hassan are all within reach on foot. Lunch is on you—eat wherever appeals to you in the town. The driver will meet you at the agreed drop-off point in the late afternoon, and you'll return to Marrakech by around 5:30 pm, arriving back at your hotel or riad.
