The experience

Pickup happens at 8am from your accommodation in Marrakech. The drive to Essaouira crosses the countryside for roughly two hours, and on the way you'll stop at an argan oil cooperative where Berber women extract and process the oil by hand: cracking nuts, grinding kernels, and pressing the paste into bottles for cosmetics and food. The cooperative shows the labor involved in what the region has produced for centuries.

Once in Essaouira, the afternoon is yours to move at your own pace. The medina sits inside medieval walls with a castle at the southern edge, and its narrow streets are lined with white-washed houses and blue shutters, French and Portuguese architecture from when the city was a colonial port. You can wander the souks (local markets), visit the jewelers' quarter, walk along the harbor where fishing boats still work, or simply sit and photograph Moulay El Hassan square. A local guide is available if you want a structured tour, but many travelers prefer to explore on their own. The medina is small and quiet enough to navigate without one. Lunch is at a restaurant in the fishing port, where the catch of the day is fresh fish.

The return drive to Marrakech leaves in the evening, arriving around 7:30pm. The full day is 12 hours from pickup to drop-off. If you're interested in water, swimming and surfing are possible, though they're not part of the standard itinerary.
