The Experience

The day starts at 8am from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. A driver and guide pick you up in an air-conditioned minivan for the three-hour drive to the coast. Two stops break the journey: a café where you can buy refreshments and use the bathroom, and a small argan oil factory where you'll see how the plant oil is produced — a local industry run by women cooperatives. On the route between the two, you may spot goats standing on the tops of trees, though they are not always there.

You arrive in Essaouira mid-morning with the rest of the day to spend as you choose. The medina is the draw: a maze of craftsmen, narrow streets and the Sqala de la Kasbah, the 18th-century bastion that rises from the seafront. Walk the city ramparts, step into the Souk Jdid Market or browse Rue Mohammed Zerktouni, the main street lined with vendors. The fishing port sits at the edge of the medina, and fresh fish restaurants line the waterfront. The Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, is also within the medina walls. Essaouira Beach stretches beyond the ramparts; on the far side, ruins of defense walls still stand.

Around 1pm, you buy lunch at a restaurant of your choice. If you want to swim, the recommended time is 2:30pm. By 3:30pm, be back at the main parking area so the minibus can depart at 4pm for the return drive to Marrakech, where you'll arrive around 7pm at the main square or your hotel.
