The Experience
Bahia Palace opens the tour—a late-19th-century monument to power built by Grand Vizier Ahmed Ibn Moussa. You walk through its vast network of rooms and courtyards, past intricate stucco panels, zellij mosaic tiling and painted cedarwood ceilings, learning how the palace was designed to house his wives and concubines. The scale of it—160 rooms arranged around gardens—makes the ambition visible in a way no description quite captures.
From there the guide takes you to the Ben Youssef Madrassa, a 14th-century Islamic college rebuilt in 1565 by the Saadian Dynasty. You stand in its monumental central courtyard, surrounded by flawless Carrera marble and complex carved plasterwork, with the historic student cells visible above—spaces that once housed up to 800 scholars. The madrassa served as a global center of learning for four centuries, and the courtyard design reflects that scholarly precision.
The tour then moves through Souk Semmarine, the old Medina's main trading thoroughfare, where you navigate under a latticed iron roof past textiles, leather goods, brass lanterns and spices. You see the Koutoubia Mosque from outside—its 77-meter minaret, built in the 12th century by the Almohad Dynasty, is the architectural blueprint for Seville's Giralda. The tour ends at Jemaa el-Fnaa square, where storytellers, musicians, acrobats and food stalls operate as they have for centuries, turning the square into an open-air theater that shifts from day to night.
