The experience

You start at the Koutoubia Mosque, the city's most recognizable landmark: its minaret is visible from almost everywhere in Marrakech and served as the model for the Giralda in Seville. The guide walks you around the exterior, explaining the Islamic architecture and the mosque's place in the city's history. From there, you move into the medina proper, where the real texture of the day begins: the Ben Youssef Madrasa, one of the city's finest historical monuments, shows you the intricate tilework and carved cedar that defined Islamic scholarship. The guide navigates you through without the crowds that pile up at more famous palaces.

The Dar el Bacha Museum of Confluences comes next. A restored palace that draws fewer visitors than the Bahia but holds the same caliber of detail: carved plaster, painted ceilings, the layout that tells you how a wealthy family actually lived. Then you enter the souks themselves, the maze of stalls and workshops where the guide points out the spice merchants, the leather workers, the textile dyers.
