The Experience

“Try the olives—just not the wrinkly ones,” our guide Youssef grinned as we squeezed through a knot of people in the souk. I’d never been to Marrakech before, so everything felt new—like the way the air smelled sweet and a bit dusty after last night’s rain, or how the sunlight bounced off those blue Majorelle walls first thing in the morning. Our driver picked us up right on time (which surprised me—I’m used to waiting), and by the time we reached Majorelle Garden, I could already hear birds fussing over the cacti. The colors there are almost too much for your eyes at first. Yves Saint Laurent really knew what he was doing.

I’m not usually big on palaces, but walking into Bahia Palace felt different. There’s this hush inside—the kind that makes you lower your voice without thinking. Youssef pointed out tiny details in the mosaic floors and carved cedar ceilings; I tried to imagine living somewhere with rooms just for listening to music or drinking tea. The Mellah—the old Jewish quarter—was next, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel much there, but seeing old men chatting under faded arches made me think about all the layers this city has.

We stopped outside Koutoubia Mosque (you can’t go in if you’re not Muslim), and even from a distance it’s hard to miss how it towers over everything else—kind of like a compass for the whole city. By late afternoon we were deep in Jamaa El Fna square where snake charmers and orange juice sellers jostled for space. The souks were chaos in the best way: voices bouncing off tin lamps, spices sharp enough to make my nose itch, someone trying (and failing) to sell me slippers two sizes too small. I still think about that olive I tried—salty and strange—and how Youssef laughed when I asked if “Marrakech” means “Land of God.” He said no one really agrees on that.
