The Experience
The boat leaves for Palancar Reef first, where the reef stretches for miles through the Cozumel Marine Park. You'll snorkel the deeper Palancar and the shallower Colombia reef in the same stop, moving between colorful corals and tropical fish. Stingrays and turtles pass through these waters, though they're not guaranteed. The guide handles the route and timing, so you focus on what's below the surface.
El Cielo comes next — the name means "heaven" in Spanish, and the shallow waters there are where starfish assemble on the sand. This is the most distinctive part of the day: you're in water so clear and calm that the starfish are visible and the stingrays circle close enough to feel real. After snorkeling, the boat stops here for fresh fruit, guacamole, and a beer or soda (soft drinks available). The whole experience runs 4 hours from start to finish.
Snorkel equipment is included and fitted for you. A bilingual guide (English and Spanish) leads both reefs and stays with the group. Bottled water comes with the trip. A photographer may be on board; pictures are available for purchase at an extra cost of around $40 and are sold separately, not as part of the tour operator's service.
