The experience

Three hours covers the essential route through Petra's carved landscape. You start at the Visitor Center, walk down the Outer Siq for about 1.2 km through the sandstone canyon, passing the Djinn Blocks and Obelisk Tomb. The canyon opens onto the Treasury, the site's most recognizable facade, where you stop to photograph and absorb the scale of the rock-cut architecture. From there the route moves through the Street of Facades and the Royal Tombs (the Urn, Silk, Corinthian and Palace tombs), then descends to the Colonnaded Street, where you pass the Nymphaeum and Great Temple ruins before ending at Qasr al-Bint, one of Petra's few free-standing structures.

A live English-speaking guide walks the route with you, sharing the history of the Nabataean city and the significance of each carved monument. Hotel pickup is arranged before the tour begins, so you don't need to navigate to the Visitor Center on your own. The itinerary is set (you move through the same sequence of stops each time), so the guide can pace the group and spend time at the landmarks that matter most.
