The experience

The morning pickup from your Amman hotel starts early (7 or 8 a.m. is typical), and the drive south takes 3 hours in a modern air-conditioned vehicle. Your driver speaks English and knows the route, but stays with the vehicle. He won't accompany you into the archaeological site itself. That separation is the point: you arrive at Petra without a fixed itinerary or a guide's schedule, free to spend your time however the ruins call for it.

Once you reach the gate, the walk begins with the Siq (a long, winding canyon carved into rose-colored stone), that opens onto the Treasury, the carved facade that dominates every photograph of Petra. From there, the Street of Facades, the Roman Theater, the Royal Tombs, and Qasr Al Bint at the end of the colonnaded street are all yours to move through at whatever pace suits you. You can walk back to meet your driver when you're ready, or linger and explore further before the return journey to Amman. The drive back takes another 3 hours.

Bottled water, WiFi and a mobile phone in the vehicle are included. If you want a guide to explain what you're looking at once you arrive, a local guide is available to hire at the site. The trip assumes at least a moderate level of fitness for the walking and the terrain.
