Step-by-step itinerary
Day trip to Petra from Amman
- Travel from Amman to Petra
- Visit Siq and Petra Treasury
- Explore Royal Palaces and City center
- Optional visit to Monastery or Area of Sacrifice
- Return to Amman
The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Amman hotel and a drive to Petra. You arrive with six hours to spend inside the site before the return journey to the city. That window is tight enough that most travelers use a guide for the opening two hours: long enough to walk the Siq (the narrow canyon approach), reach the Treasury carved into the cliff face, and get oriented to the layout. After those two hours, the guide steps back and you're free to wander.
The remaining four hours are yours to spend. Some people climb to the Monastery, a steep walk that takes most of an afternoon on its own. Others explore the Royal Palaces and the City center at ground level, moving at their own speed. The Area of Sacrifice sits higher up and requires more time and effort. Bottled water is provided, and you set the pace. There's no group to keep up with and no schedule beyond the pickup time for the drive back to Amman.
The driver speaks English and handles all transport. You don't arrange a car or navigate the route yourself. If you skip the guide option, you're on your own from the moment you enter, which works if you've researched the site beforehand or prefer to wander without narration. The guide option costs extra and is available only if you select it at checkout.
What’s included
- Bottled water.
- hotel pickup and drop-off within Amman city.
- English-speaking driver for the full round-trip.
- English-speaking guide at Petra for two hours only if the guided option is selected at checkout.

Top questions
How much time do I actually spend walking around Petra itself?
You have approximately six hours at the site after arrival. If you book the guide, two of those hours are spent with them navigating the Siq and Treasury. The remaining four hours are self-guided, so you choose where to go and how long to stay at each spot.
What is the Siq and why does the guide focus on it first?
The Siq is the narrow canyon entrance to Petra, carved through rose-colored rock and lined with carved facades. It's the main approach to the Treasury and sets the context for the entire site, so guides typically start there to orient you before you explore on your own.
Can I visit the Monastery in the time I have?
The Monastery is reachable within your six-hour window, but it's a steep uphill walk that takes most travelers two to three hours round-trip from the Treasury. You can do it if you skip other sites or move quickly, but it's not a casual add-on.
Do I need to book the guide, or can I explore Petra without one?
The guide is optional. You can choose transportation only and navigate Petra entirely on your own, or add the guide for the first two hours to learn the layout and history before exploring independently. Both options are available at checkout.
What happens during the drive back to Amman?
After your time at Petra ends, the driver collects you and returns you to your Amman hotel. The full round-trip takes twelve hours from pickup to drop-off, so plan for a long day.
