The experience
The Siq is a narrow canyon carved into rose-colored stone, and walking it is how you enter Petra. The trail leads straight to the Treasury, the site's most photographed monument, then opens into the wider valley where the Royal Tombs rise from the cliff face. You have three hours to move through these landmarks at your own pace, with the option to hike further to the Monastery if the time and your legs allow. Camel and donkey rides are available if you want them, and the site has plenty of side routes and hidden alcoves to discover on your own.
After Petra, the tour crosses into Wadi Rum's protected desert area, where sandstone mountains tower over vast dunes and the landscape shifts entirely. You spend two hours here, moving through the terrain and taking in the scale of the place. The drive itself is part of the experience: the route between the two sites covers the distance and the changing terrain of central Jordan.
The Dead Sea Museum wraps up the day with a look at the geology and history of the salt lake below sea level. The stop lasts about an hour and includes views across the water. Private air-conditioned transport runs the whole route, and your driver speaks English. The tour runs 11 to 13 hours door-to-door, with pickup from your Amman hotel or airport included.
