The experience

The Kings Way is not a single landmark but a path through layers: Mount Nebo sits 710 metres above sea level, the ridge where the Hebrew Bible says Moses saw the Promised Land, and on clear days you can see Jerusalem and the Dead Sea from the summit. The view frames the Jordan Valley to the north. From there the route descends to Madaba, where Saint George Church holds the Madaba Mosaic Map, a 6th-century floor mosaic showing the oldest surviving depiction of the Holy Land and Jerusalem. The same town contains the Church of John the Baptist, a Latin Catholic church where religious rituals have continued without interruption since its construction. You can climb the bell tower for a view across Madaba itself.

Between Madaba and Karak, the route opens onto Wadi Mujib, a river canyon that drops into the Dead Sea and separates the two towns. The stop is for photographs of the panoramic valley. Karak Castle, the second-largest Crusader fortress in the Levant, dates to the 1140s and dominates the landscape from its position in al-Karak. Dana village and Shobak Castle follow before the route reaches Petra, the ancient Nabataean city carved into rose-coloured rock more than 2,000 years ago. Your driver is trained and fluent in English. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the journey includes bottled water, onboard WiFi and all parking fees. Fuel surcharge is covered. You can arrange pickup from Amman or Madaba, and the tour is customizable: extend it across multiple days or book it as a round trip by contacting the operator.
