The experience
Madaba, known as the City of Mosaics, anchors the first part of the day. You'll spend time at the Madaba Archaeological Museum exploring regional artifacts, then move through St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church with its underground tunnels leading to ancient ruins. The centerpiece is St. George's Church, where the 6th-century Madaba Map (an intricate floor mosaic depicting the ancient Holy Land) occupies a full hour of the tour. This is not a quick glance. The map is large enough to walk around and study the detail.
Mount Nebo comes next, a one-hour stop where you stand at elevation overlooking the Jordan Valley. The Memorial Church of Moses sits here, and the site holds its own 6th-century floor mosaics showing pastoral scenes, animals, and hunting. The views stretch across the valley floor, and the mosaics add a layer of history to the landscape itself.
The Baptism Site, also called Yardenit, takes up the final two hours. This is the longest single stop, and it is the spiritual anchor of the tour. You'll have time to walk the site believed to be where John the Baptist baptized Jesus, with the Jordan River itself as the setting. Your driver will be waiting when you finish, and the return to Amman is a straight drive back to your hotel or starting point. Entrance fees to all three main sites run around USD 30 total and are paid separately. Meals and drinks are not included.
