The Experience

We piled into the van just after sunrise in Amman—still a bit groggy, but our driver Sami handed out bottled water and grinned like he’d been up for hours. The city faded behind us and I watched the colors shift outside: beige buildings giving way to dusty hills. First stop was Madaba. I’d read about the mosaics but seeing them up close—tiny colored stones making up whole ancient maps—felt different. Sami pointed at one tile and told us it was older than his grandmother (and she’s apparently “very old,” he laughed). I tried to imagine all the hands that made those patterns.

Mount Nebo was next. There’s this hush when you get out of the car—the wind carries something sharp, almost salty, and you can see so far it messes with your sense of distance. Our guide explained how Moses is said to have seen the Promised Land from here. I’m not religious but standing there, sky wide open and everything stretching below, I got why people come. We took photos but honestly, none of them catch what it feels like to stand on that ridge.

The Baptism Site was quieter than I expected—just a few other visitors, some birds flicking around in the reeds. The air felt heavy with history (and humidity), and I caught myself whispering without meaning to. Sami let us wander a bit; he told me later his uncle comes here every year to pray. That stuck with me for some reason.

I didn’t really believe you could float that easily in the Dead Sea until I tried it myself—one second standing on gritty salt crystals, next thing you know you’re bobbing like a cork. The water stings any tiny cut (learned that fast), but it’s worth it for that weird weightless feeling. Lunch at the resort tasted extra good after all that salt—I still think about those olives sometimes.
