Three Mt. Fuji World Heritage stops in one morning from the port

A 5.5-hour guided tour from Shimizu Port visits three Mt. Fuji World Heritage sites: Lake Tanuki, where local people camp and photograph Mt. Fuji without the crowds of Kawaguchi. Shiraito Falls and Otodome Falls, fed by Mt. Fuji spring water; and Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine, built in the 9th century to protect against volcanic eruptions and now the foremost shrine of over 1,300 Sengen shrines nationwide. A government-certified English-speaking guide leads groups of up to 25 on a chartered medium bus with a professional driver. The tour departs and returns to Shimizu Port, and includes highway tolls and parking fees.

The Experience

The tour leaves Shimizu Port by small bus and heads to Lake Tanuki, one of the most photographed spots for Mt. Fuji views among photographers. Unlike the busier Lake Kawaguchi, this lake stays peaceful and draws mostly local people on holiday or camping trips: most cruise ship tours skip it entirely. You get time to take in the view and understand why it matters to people who live here.

From there the bus moves to Shiraito Falls and its companion Otodome Falls, both part of Mt. Fuji's World Heritage designation. The water comes mostly from Mt. Fuji spring water, and the falls rank among Japan's most beautiful. A wheelchair-accessible viewing spot lets visitors of different mobility levels see the same view. The sound and sight of the falls make up the heart of the stop.

The final stop is Fujisan Hongu Sengen Shrine, the head shrine of the Sengen network and originally built in the 9th century as protection against Mt. Fuji's eruptions. As devotion to Mt. Fuji spread across Japan, this shrine became the foremost of more than 1,300 Sengen shrines. The bus returns you to Shimizu Port at the end, and the whole outing takes 5.5 hours, which fits the time most cruise passengers have between ship departures.

Top questions

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is not part of this tour, so you'll want to plan a meal either before departure or after you return to Shimizu Port.

What makes Lake Tanuki different from Lake Kawaguchi?

Lake Tanuki is a peaceful spot where local people spend their holidays and camp, and it stays off the typical cruise ship tour circuit. Lake Kawaguchi, by contrast, draws much heavier tourist traffic, so this tour gives you a quieter Mt. Fuji photo experience.

Can I bring a stroller or wheelchair on this tour?

Yes. The tour accommodates strollers and wheelchairs, and there is a wheelchair-accessible viewing spot at Shiraito Falls. Let the operator know the number and size of any stroller or wheelchair when you book.

Who leads the tour and what language is it in?

A government-certified English-speaking guide leads the tour on a chartered medium bus with a professional licensed driver, so you get live commentary throughout the 5.5 hours.
