The experience
The ropeway from Nihondaira to Kunozan Toshogu Shrine takes five minutes and carries you over Suruga Bay: the round trip, with waiting time, runs about twenty minutes. From the top, you reach the shrine itself, a national treasure dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period, whose mausoleum sits on the grounds. Stone steps lead up after you exit the ropeway, so the climb is part of the visit. The Nihondaira Yume Terrace Observatory, which opened in 2018, offers views across Mt. Fuji, Shimizu Port, the Izu Peninsula, and the Southern Alps on clear days.
At Nihondaira Ocha Kaikan, a Japanese tea shop with its own green tea field, you can photograph Mt. Fuji rising above the rows of tea plants when weather permits. The bus then carries you to Miho Beach, part of the Mt. Fuji World Heritage site, where a pine tree grove frames black sand and white waves. The Miho no Matsugara Culture & Creativity Center screens a short film about the area and tells the Hagoromo legend. Even if clouds hide Mt. Fuji from the beach itself, the center gives the stop its own reason to linger.
The tour departs and returns to Shimizu Port. The operator recommends starting as early as possible to avoid lines at the ropeway. Groups stay under ten bookings per day, keeping the experience smaller than the maximum capacity of 26 travelers allows. If you're traveling with wheelchairs or strollers, note the size when you book so the guide can plan accordingly.
