The experience

You arrive in Shizuoka with a free afternoon or morning and no fixed itinerary. The guide meets you on foot in a designated area and starts by asking what you want to experience. This is not a set route with fixed stops. Instead, you choose three to four sites from the list before the tour begins: Miho no Matsubara (a seven-kilometer coastline of 30,000 pine trees with Mt. Fuji framed beyond them, featured in traditional ukiyo-e paintings and part of Mt. Fuji's World Heritage designation). Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a 400-year-old shrine to Tokugawa Ieyasu perched 216 meters up on Mt. Kuno, reachable by ropeway gondola with views across Suruga Bay to the Izu Peninsula. Nihondaira, a hilltop at 300 meters overlooking tea fields with Mt. Fuji in the distance and the lights of Shimizu City below at dusk; Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, a group of three shrines with vermilion gates and a museum of Tokugawa documents; or Sumpu Castle Park, built on the grounds of the former castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu retired. Two sites further out, the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Exhibition and Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha, the head shrine of over 1,300 Sengen shrines: require roughly an hour of train travel one way and need advance discussion with your guide.

The guide is a government-licensed interpreter certified in Japanese culture and history, fluent in English, and experienced in the region. Over six hours, they handle the route between your chosen sites, explain what you are standing in front of, and answer questions about the history: the unification of Japan under Ieyasu, the role of Mt. Fuji in Japanese art and spirituality, the layout of the shrines and castles. You walk between viewpoints and through shrine precincts. Public transportation is available nearby if you need it, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels. Entrance fees to shrines and museums (ranging from 500 to 800 yen per site) and any train or local transport costs are paid separately.

Can I visit both Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and Nihondaira in one tour?

Yes. Both are among the recommended sites you can choose for your customized itinerary. Kunozan Toshogu Shrine sits on Mt. Kuno at 216 meters, reached by ropeway gondola, and Nihondaira is a separate hilltop at 300 meters with its own views of Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay. Your guide can include both if that is what you want to see.

Do I need to pay entrance fees, or are they included?

Entrance fees are separate. Kunozan Toshogu Shrine costs 500 yen for adults (or 800 yen for a joint ticket to the shrine and museum). Other sites have their own fees. Your guide will tell you the costs before you enter so there are no surprises.

How far are the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Exhibition and Fujisan Hongū Sengen Taisha from the other sites?

Both require approximately one hour of train travel one way without stopping. They are further out than the main Shizuoka sites, so you would need to discuss them with your guide in advance if you want to include them. They may not fit comfortably into a six-hour tour alongside other stops.
