The Experience
You're picked up at Shimizu Port and driven to Nihondaira Plateau, where the Nihondaira Yume Terrace Observatory (opened November 2018) offers views of Mt. Fuji, the port, the Izu Peninsula, and the Southern Alps. At the Nihondaira Ocha Kaikan tea shop, you can photograph Mt. Fuji framed by the green tea fields below, weather permitting. The guide knows the area well and speaks English throughout.
Next is Ryugeji Temple, established in 1670 by a priest close to Ieyasu Tokugawa. The temple sits on the foot of Mount Udo and is famous for its Mt. Fuji view and a cycas revoluta tree designated as a national natural treasure. You'll need to remove your shoes inside the main hall. Admission is paid in cash on arrival. The temple also holds the grave of Chogyu Takayama, a Meiji-period intellectual.
The final stop is Miho no Matsubara, part of the Mt. Fuji World Heritage site. The Miho no Matsugara Culture & Creativity Center (opened March 2019) shows the history of Miho, the Hagoromo legend, and a short film about the site: useful if weather blocks the Mt. Fuji view. The beach itself is a black sand and white wave landscape framed by a green pine grove, with Mt. Fuji visible on clear days. The van returns you to Shimizu Port.
