The Experience
The private vehicle means you move through Kobe on your own schedule, not a group's. Your English-speaking driver knows the city and handles navigation while you decide which attractions matter. The tour spans six hours and covers ground, from the hillside views of Mount Rokko down to the waterfront at Harborland and out to the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which opened in 1998 and stretches nearly four kilometers across the strait to Awaji Island. The Bridge Exhibition Center at its base holds detailed information about the structure, though explanations are in Japanese.
The Earthquake Memorial Museum sits downtown and documents the 1995 Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake through a large-screen theater, documentary film, and interactive displays about disaster prevention. The Shin-Kobe Ropeway lifts you up the southern slopes of Rokko, passing the Nunobiki Waterfall and Herb Garden on the ascent. The observation deck at the top offers panoramic views of the city and the Hanshin region, and is a popular spot for sunset. Kitano-cho, the historic foreign merchant district at Rokko's foot, preserves more than a dozen mansions open as museums, each charging 550 to 750 yen, with combination tickets available. The neighborhood also holds cafes, restaurants and boutiques worth exploring on foot.
You choose which three to four sites fit your interests and how much time each deserves. The driver waits and moves you between them. You're free to linger, skip ahead, or adjust the route. Pickup is included. Entrance fees, lunch and personal expenses are your own. Vehicle options range from a regular car for three passengers to a minivan for five or a van for eight, so group size determines the booking.

Is this one for you?Book the regular car if you're traveling as a couple or solo. The minivan or van if your group is larger and wants to keep everyone together in one vehicle. The six-hour window is enough to visit three to four major sites without rushing, but not enough to see everything Kobe has to offer. Choose your priorities before the day starts so the driver can plan the route efficiently.

Top questions
Can children come?
6 to 11 years, free; under 6, free.
What is the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and why is it worth seeing?
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge is the world's longest suspension bridge at nearly four kilometers, opened in 1998 to span the strait between Kobe and Awaji Island. The Bridge Exhibition Center at its base explains the engineering and construction, though the detailed text is in Japanese only. Many visitors drive or walk across it for the views and the scale of the structure itself.
Can I visit the Nunobiki Waterfall, or just see it from the ropeway?
You can hike down from the ropeway station to visit the falls up close. The Shin-Kobe Ropeway passes the Nunobiki Waterfall and Herb Garden on the way up, and the round-trip ticket (1,500 yen) includes admission to the herb garden. One-way tickets are also available.
What is Kitano-cho and what will I find there?
Kitano-cho is a historic district at the foot of Rokko mountain where foreign merchants and diplomats settled after Kobe's port opened to foreign trade in the 19th century. More than a dozen former mansions, called Ijinkan, remain and operate as museums charging 550 to 750 yen each. The neighborhood also has cafes, restaurants and boutiques, and is pleasant to walk through.
How does the driver differ from a tour guide?
Your English-speaking driver provides transportation and local knowledge of the route and city, but does not narrate the sites or lead a structured tour. You control how long to spend at each attraction and which stops to prioritize within the six-hour window.
What happens if I want to visit fewer than three or four sites?
The tour is customizable, so you choose three to four stops from the available list based on your interests. The driver adjusts the route to fit your preferences and the time you want to spend at each location.
Do I need to book a guide separately, or is the driver enough?
The driver is included and speaks English. A licensed local guide is optional and available as an add-on at checkout if you want detailed commentary at the sites. The base tour is driver-only, giving you independence to explore at your own pace.
