The Experience

You arrive in Takayama and your driver meets you with a private vehicle sized for your party: a regular car for up to three, a minivan for up to five, or a van for up to eight. From there, the route is yours to shape. The driver takes you to Shirakawa-go, the village famous for its steep-roofed farmhouses built to shed heavy snow, and you decide which stops to linger at: the Wada house, still inhabited after 1850 and open to visitors; the old shrine surrounded by towering cedars; the castle ruins and keep that frame the village from above; or the craft shops tucked inside the thatched roofs themselves. There is no fixed itinerary and no group moving ahead of you.

The driver speaks English and knows the area, but the day unfolds at your pace. You spend as long as you want at each stop: an hour at one viewpoint, twenty minutes at another, or skip it entirely if something else catches your attention. Once you have seen what matters to you in Shirakawa-go, your driver takes you onward to Kanazawa, where the tour ends and your next leg of travel begins. The whole journey runs eight hours from start to finish.

Entrance fees to the houses and shrines are separate, as is lunch. You handle those as you go. The vehicle is wheelchair accessible, and car seats or booster seats are available if you book them in advance by contacting the operator directly.
