The Experience
Shiraito Falls opens the tour: a 20-metre waterfall spanning 150 metres across, one of Japan's 100 most famous falls and a place of pilgrimage for centuries. The negative ions from the spray are said to calm the mind, and the surrounding area gives you time to walk and absorb the setting before moving on.
Sengen Taisha Shrine comes next, the head shrine of over 1,300 Sengen shrines across Japan and the oldest in the Tokai region. Tokugawa Ieyasu built the main shrine, now a national important cultural property, and the grounds hold Wakutama-ike pond, fed by snowmelt from Mt. Fuji itself and designated a national special monument. The shrine's deity is Mt. Fuji, so the architecture and the landscape are bound together.
The Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre closes the loop with a simulated climb accessible to small children and people with limited mobility, video presentations about the mountain, and on clear days, panoramic views of Mt. Fuji from the top floor. Many visitors grab Fujinomiya Yakisoba, the local specialty (glutinous noodles topped with meat, fish shavings and other toppings) either at the centre or nearby before heading back.
