The experience

The thatched farmhouses of Shirakawa-go are the anchor of this tour: structures over 150 years old that families still call home, built in a style shaped by the mountain winters and the region's history. Your guide walks you through the Wada house and other examples, explaining how these buildings were constructed and why they have survived. From the village, you climb to the castle ruins for a view across the whole settlement before heading to Takayama, where the landscape shifts from farmland to a town dense with craft shops, sake breweries, and restaurants.

Takayama's Sanmachi Suji is a pedestrian street lined with wooden storefronts from the Edo period, packed with local specialties (Hida beef, rice crackers, sake), and the kind of foot traffic that fills the street with energy. The Festival Floats Exhibition Hall (Matsuri no Mori) sits nearby, showing the full-sized yatai floats that Takayama's festivals parade through town, decorated with gold leaf and lacquer, alongside mechanical karakuri dolls that perform in an underground hall. If you want a broader look at the region's architecture, the Hida Folk Village displays over 30 traditional houses relocated from across the Hida district, all built during the Edo period. Your guide helps you decide which stops fit the time you have and what you came to see.

The tour runs eight hours from pickup in Kanazawa. You travel by private car (either a regular sedan for up to two passengers or a van for up to seven), and the guide is with you the whole day. Once you book, the guide contacts you to nail down which sites matter most and build a route that works for your schedule. If you want to add more attractions beyond the standard three to four, extension fees apply. Contact the operator directly about that before booking.
