The Experience
You start in Kanazawa and head out on the scenic route toward Shirakawago with your private driver. Along the way, you'll stop at sites you pick from the itinerary: the Wada house, a farmhouse still lived in today where you can learn how traditional Japanese houses were built; another thatched-roof structure from 1850; a shrine hundreds of years old, set among towering cedar trees; the castle keep, which frames a different angle of the village with the Wada house in the center; a shop inside a thatched-roof house selling local crafts; and the castle ruins themselves, offering views across Shirakawa village. Your driver explains what you're seeing and can adjust the pace or the order to suit your interests.
Once you've spent your time in Shirakawago, your driver takes you on to Takayama, a traditional city where you can continue exploring Japan on your own schedule. The whole journey (from Kanazawa through Shirakawago and on to Takayama) runs seven hours. You travel in a private vehicle (either a regular car for up to three people or a van for up to eight), so there's no waiting for group departures or coordinating with other travelers. Your English-speaking driver handles the route and the stops. You just decide which sites matter most to you.
