Three Shizuoka landmarks without a guide. Just a driver and a translation app
A self-guided taxi tour of Shizuoka using private transportation to visit three major sites: Miho no Matsubara, a UNESCO World Heritage component and Japan's New Three Views; Nihondaira observation deck with 360° views of Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay; and Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, the lacquered Edo-period shrine associated with shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The driver communicates via translation app, and the tour runs five hours with air-conditioned vehicle and highway tolls included. Entry fees to attractions are separate.

The Experience
Miho no Matsubara is where this tour begins: a pine-lined shore registered as part of the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Site and ranked among Japan's New Three Views since 1915. You walk the beach at your own pace, then move on to Nihondaira, a scenic plateau about 300 meters above sea level that has been voted the number-one sightseeing spot on Japan's list of 100 best views. The Nihondaira Yume Terrace observation deck gives you a full 360° panorama: Mount Fuji, Miho Matsubara below, Suruga Bay, and Shizuoka city spread across the horizon.
The third stop is Kunozan Toshogu Shrine, a historic shrine with all-lacquered pavilions that show the wealth of the early Edo period. The shrine is tied to Tokugawa Ieyasu, though whether he is actually buried in the mausoleum on the grounds remains a mystery. A museum on site holds valuable historical documents, including the armor of successive Tokugawa shoguns. The climb involves more than 100 steps after the ropeway, so the tour suits people without leg or back problems.
You travel in a private, air-conditioned vehicle with a driver who does not speak English but will use a translation app to communicate with you. This setup costs less than a guided tour because there is no guide fee. Highway tolls and transportation are included. Entrance fees to each attraction are paid separately.
