The experience

The day starts from your Tokyo hotel and heads toward whichever region you chose. If Mt Fuji is your pick, the drive to Chureito Pagoda takes about 90 minutes. That's where you'll find the iconic shot of Japan's most famous mountain framed by the five-storied red pagoda. From there the route moves through Iyashi no Sato, a living village of thatched-roof houses where artisans still work, then down to Lake Kawaguchi for the reflection views and a quiet stop at Yagizaki Park before descending into Narusawa Ice Cave, an underground world carved by ancient lava flows and lined with permanent ice.

The Hakone option takes a different shape. Mishima Sky Walk is Japan's longest suspension bridge, strung across valleys with Mt Fuji visible in the distance. The Hakone Shrine sits on the lake with its famous crimson torii gate rising from the water. The Ropeway carries you above Owakudani's steaming volcanic valleys, and then you board a boat across Lake Ashi itself: the kind of slow, panoramic crossing that gives you time to sit with the landscape. The Open-Air Museum ends the day with sculptures placed into the mountainside and gardens, art woven into the terrain rather than hung on walls.
