The Experience

First thing I remember is our driver, Kenji, waving at us outside the hotel—big smile, kind of shy. He asked if we’d ever tried tamago-yaki at Tsukiji Outer Market. I hadn’t, so we stopped there first. The air smelled like grilled fish and sweet soy, and I’m not sure what time it was but people were already lining up for sushi. Kenji showed us a tiny shop where the chef handed me a warm egg roll on a stick—so soft it almost fell apart. I tried to thank him in Japanese but just made him laugh.

We zipped through Tokyo in this spotless van (I swear you could eat off the floor), passing places I’d only seen in movies. At Senso-ji Temple, Kenji told us about the incense smoke—he said it’s good luck if you waft it over your head. My hair still smelled faintly smoky hours later. Nakamise Street was packed but somehow peaceful, with vendors calling out and little paper lanterns swaying overhead. We bought some red bean snacks that stuck to my teeth.

I didn’t expect to feel so calm walking under those trees at Meiji Shrine—the city noise just faded out completely for a minute. Later at Shibuya Crossing, Kenji counted down with us before we crossed (“Ready? Go!”) and it was honestly wild how many directions people moved at once. He pointed out Hachiko’s statue; there was a group of teenagers taking turns hugging it for photos. We could’ve stopped at Tokyo Tower or gone up Skytree (we skipped the lines), but seeing those buildings from below was enough for me that day.

By late afternoon we rolled into Ginza—neon lights flickering even though the sun wasn’t down yet—and Kenji offered some tips on where locals actually eat (not the fancy places). I still think about that view from the window as we drove back: city lights starting to glow, everyone heading somewhere else. It felt like we’d seen a hundred versions of Tokyo in one day, but there’s always more hiding around a corner.
