The Experience

The driver was already waiting when we came down to the lobby, holding a sign with our names on it. That's when it hit us: we'd booked a private car, not a minibus with twenty other people. It's a series of thin cascades dropping over dark rock, and the light hits it differently depending on the time of day. The driver knew the best angle for photos without saying much about it.

Chureito Pagoda is perched on a mountainside overlooking Fuji city with Mount Fuji in the distance, and yeah, it's the shot every photographer wants. We climbed the steps up to it, and the driver stayed with the car but told us to take our time. The pagoda is five stories, red and white, and it frames the mountain perfectly if you position yourself right. We spent longer there than we'd planned because the light kept changing. Then we had the option to swing by Fuji Safari Park on the southern slopes (you can see freely roaming lions, elephants, giraffes, and other animals from the car), but we were getting tired, so we skipped it and headed back to Tokyo instead. The driver didn't push us either way.
