The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the air changed as we left Tokyo: crisper, almost sweet, like someone had opened a window after a long winter. Our guide, Yuki, kept us laughing on the drive (she said my pronunciation of “Kawaguchiko” needed work, she wasn’t wrong). When we pulled up at Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba, the thatched roofs looked like something from an old painting. The smell of wood smoke drifted by as a local woman showed us how she weaves straw sandals: her hands moved so fast I lost track. I tried one on. It felt rough but sort of grounding. Didn’t expect that.

Climbing those 398 steps to Chureito Pagoda was no joke. I stopped halfway to catch my breath and heard a group of schoolkids giggling behind me. At the top, though, everything just… paused. Mount Fuji sat there in the distance, half-shy behind some clouds, with Fujiyoshida spread out below. People were mostly quiet except for camera clicks and one guy muttering “wow” under his breath. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on a crowded train back home.

We wandered through Oishi Park next: flowers everywhere, even though it wasn’t peak season yet. The lake was calm enough to mirror Fuji almost perfectly (Yuki said it’s rare to get it so clear). Lunch was at this little spot near Lake Kawaguchi. Nothing fancy but the miso soup tasted extra good after all the walking. Later at Oshino Hakkai, I tried the spring water: cold enough to make my teeth ache, but somehow sweeter than bottled stuff. An old man at the pond smiled when he saw me flinch from the cold.

By late afternoon we stopped at Fuji Sengen Shrine, a place older than most countries, and Yuki explained how locals come here for luck or safe childbirth. The trees around the shrine felt ancient and sort of protective. Maybe that’s just me getting sentimental after a long day out.
