The Experience

Your driver arrives at your Tokyo hotel in the morning and you're already moving toward the mountains. The scenic drive to Hakone takes you through the Fuji region on roads that climb and curve, each turn revealing a different angle of Mt. By mid-morning you're at Hakone Shrine, founded in 757 on the shores of Lake Ashi. The red Torii gate stands in the water, and the shrine itself sits quiet among the trees — no crowds, just the sound of the lake and the weight of centuries. You walk the grounds, see the smaller shrines and buildings, then drive along the lake's edge to stop at more Torii gates and shrine spots. After that comes Amazake Chaya, a teahouse hidden in cedar forest that's been serving travelers for over 400 years. The wooden beams are darkened from centuries of hearth smoke. You drink amazake, a sweet rice drink that pilgrims used to drink here, and eat simple local snacks. It's the kind of place that makes you understand why people talk about the spirit of old Japan — it's still here, just not advertised.

Then you reach the onsen. You can choose which one depending on what you want that day, and the staff will prepare a meal of local specialties. You soak in the thermal water, maybe get a massage, and there's a relaxation room where people nap by the water if they want to. This is the part of the day that actually slows down — no schedule, just time. After lunch and the bath, you head to the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where over a thousand sculptures by Picasso, Henry Moore, and Japanese artists are spread across 70,000 square meters of gardens. It's both art and landscape at once. If the weather turns or you move quickly, the Pola Museum of Art is nearby, built into a beech forest with a collection of Western and Japanese paintings, ceramics, and impressionist work.

On the drive back to Tokyo, if time allows, you take a second panoramic road through the Fuji-Hakone region with four more viewpoint stops — each one giving you a closer look at Fuji, Lake Ashinoko, and even the sea on clear days. The whole day is private, so the pace and stops shift based on what interests you. You're back at your hotel by evening.
