itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Mount Fuji and Hakone area

  • Pickup from Tokyo hotel
  • Drive to Hakone (1.5-2 hours)
  • Visit Hakone torii gate at Lake Ashi
  • Explore Lake Ashi
  • Take Lake Ashi Pirate Cruise
  • Ride Hakone Ropeway
  • Visit Owakudani and try black eggs
  • Visit Hakone Open-Air Museum
  • Optional shopping at Gotemba Premium Outlets

“If you eat one black egg here, you’ll live seven years longer,” our driver Kenji grinned as he handed me this warm, sulfur-scented egg at Owakudani. I wasn’t sure if he was joking or quoting some old legend, but I ate it anyway — honestly, it tasted just like any other egg, but the smell stuck to my fingers for hours. The whole place hissed with steam and there was this faint tang in the air that made me think of boiled coins. It’s weirdly comforting when you’re standing on a volcano.

The drive out from Tokyo took about two hours — longer than I expected because we hit some traffic leaving Shinjuku, but Kenji had bottled water ready and played 80s J-pop quietly in the background. When we finally reached Lake Ashi, the clouds were low but you could still make out Mount Fuji’s outline behind the trees. We took the pirate boat across the lake (yes, there are actual pirate boats — painted bright red and gold), and I ended up laughing more than I thought I would at how seriously some people took their selfies.

After that came the Hakone Ropeway — honestly, my palms got sweaty just stepping into that glass bubble. But floating over those green slopes with Fuji peeking through gaps in the mist felt sort of unreal. Kenji pointed out tiny onsens down below; apparently locals come here for weekends just to soak. There was a moment where everyone went quiet in our car — just watching fog roll over the valley. It’s hard to describe why that silence sticks with me.

The last stop was Hakone Open-Air Museum. You walk through gardens dotted with sculptures — some massive, some hidden behind hedges — and there’s even a whole building for Picasso works (I didn’t expect that). By then my legs were tired but I didn’t really want to leave yet. If you have time left (and energy), Kenji offered to swing by Gotemba Outlets for shopping before heading back to Tokyo. We skipped it — too full from snacks and too sleepy from all that fresh mountain air.
